1.4 Individual Product Optimisation Guide
1. Introduction
SmartDescribe Pro helps WooCommerce store owners create AI-generated alternative text (alt text) for product featured images.
Alt text describes the visual content of an image. It helps people using screen readers understand images and gives search engines additional context about the image content.
Individual product optimisation allows you to work on one product at a time. This is useful when you want to improve a specific product image, test your AI provider settings or review the quality of the generated descriptions before processing more products.
This guide explains how to find a product, run an optimisation and review the result.
2. Before You Begin
Before optimising a product, check that:
- SmartDescribe Pro is installed and activated.
- WooCommerce is active.
- Your Pro licence is active where required.
- Your chosen AI provider has been configured.
- Your API key has been saved.
- The provider connection test has succeeded.
- The product you want to optimise has a featured image.
If you have not completed the initial configuration, refer to SmartDescribe Pro — Installation and Activation and SmartDescribe Pro — AI Provider Setup and API Configuration.
3. Open the Products Screen
Sign in to your WordPress administration dashboard.
In the left-hand menu, select:
SmartDescribe → Products
The Products screen provides access to your WooCommerce products and their image alt text optimisation controls.
Depending on the installed version and screen layout, you may see product information such as:
- Product name.
- Current alt text.
- Product optimisation controls.
- Bulk selection options.
- Optimisation status or progress information.
Use this screen to locate the product you want to update.
4. Find the Product You Want to Optimise
Locate the product in the displayed product list.
Choose a product with a featured image that you can inspect easily.
For example, a handmade mosaic ornament might have a featured image showing its shape, colours, materials and decorative details.
Before starting, consider whether the image is clear enough for the AI to identify its important visual features.
If your catalogue is large, use any available product search or filtering controls to narrow the list.
5. Review the Existing Alt Text
Before making changes, examine the current alt text for the product’s featured image.
The existing description may already be accurate and useful. In that case, you may not need to change it.
If the description is missing, vague or inaccurate, optimisation may help.
For example:
Existing alt text:
IMG_2847
Potential improved alt text:
Handmade mosaic mushroom ornament with purple and yellow tiles
The second example provides meaningful visual information instead of an uninformative filename.
The generated description must still match the actual image. Do not assume the AI will always identify every material, colour or product detail correctly.
Important: If the existing alt text is valuable, record it before optimising. Do not assume that the original description can always be recovered.
6. Run an Individual Optimisation
Once you have selected the product, follow these steps.
Step 1 — Locate the optimisation control
Find the product in the SmartDescribe Products screen.
Step 2 — Click Optimise
Click the Optimise button associated with that product.
SmartDescribe Pro sends the relevant image information to your configured AI provider for processing.
Step 3 — Wait for processing
Allow the request to complete.
Avoid repeatedly clicking the button while the same request is running. Repeated requests may consume additional API usage.
Step 4 — Review the result
When processing finishes, examine the generated alt text and any status message displayed by the plugin.
If an error appears, use the troubleshooting section later in this guide.
7. Review the Generated Alt Text
Never assume that an AI-generated description is automatically correct.
Check the result before relying on it.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- Accuracy: Does the text describe what is actually visible?
- Relevance: Does it focus on useful visual details?
- Clarity: Can someone understand the image from the description?
- Length: Is it concise without leaving out important information?
- Natural wording: Does it read like a useful description rather than a list of keywords?
- Accessibility: Would the description help someone who cannot see the image?
For a handmade product, relevant details may include its colour, shape, decorative pattern and distinctive appearance.
Avoid unnecessary sales language, unsupported claims and repeated keywords.
8. Understand What SmartDescribe Optimises
SmartDescribe Pro is designed to optimise alt text for WooCommerce product featured images.
Do not assume that an individual optimisation automatically updates:
- Every image in the product gallery.
- Images embedded in the product description.
- Images elsewhere on your website.
- Product titles or long descriptions.
- Product SEO metadata unrelated to the alt text workflow.
If you need to improve gallery images, check the plugin’s documented image coverage before assuming they are included.
9. Understand the Role of Writing Tone and Length
SmartDescribe Pro provides settings to guide the style and length of generated descriptions.
You can configure these preferences under:
SmartDescribe → Settings
Writing Tone
The available tone choices may include Professional, Friendly & Casual, Luxury & Premium, Technical & Detailed, Playful and Minimalist.
Choose the tone that best suits your store.
For example, a store selling handmade art may benefit from friendly, descriptive wording. A store selling technical equipment may need concise descriptions that emphasise visible product features.
Remember that alt text is primarily descriptive. A tone setting should not turn it into an advertisement.
Description Length
Adjust the available length setting to suit your needs.
A useful alt text description is not necessarily a long one. Focus on conveying the important visual information in as few words as practical.
After changing settings, save them before running another optimisation.
10. Use Category Templates Where Available
SmartDescribe Pro includes category-specific template functionality.
Where this feature is available and configured, templates can help guide descriptions for different product categories.
For example:
- Handmade art may need descriptions of colours, patterns and visual style.
- Clothing may need descriptions of visible colours, patterns and garment type.
- Home décor may benefit from descriptions of shape, finish and decorative details.
Templates should improve consistency without encouraging the AI to invent details that are not visible.
If a generated description is repeatedly unsuitable for a particular category, review its template instructions and test the result on another product.
11. Check the Product After Optimisation
After processing, verify the result.
- Return to the product in WordPress if necessary.
- Open the product for editing.
- Locate its featured image in the product image settings.
- Open the image details or media settings.
- Check the alternative text.
- Confirm that the description is appropriate for the image.
The precise location of the alt text field can vary with the WordPress editor and media interface.
If the alt text has not changed as expected, check the optimisation status and any error message before attempting the operation again.
12. What If the Generated Description Is Wrong?
AI can misunderstand an image or produce wording that is incomplete or inaccurate.
If the result is unsuitable:
- Do not leave inaccurate text in place simply because it was AI-generated.
- Correct the alt text manually where appropriate.
- Review your writing tone and length settings.
- Check whether a category template is influencing the result.
- Try another product image if the original image is unclear.
- Test the revised settings on one product before continuing.
If the problem affects multiple products, investigate the provider configuration or template settings rather than repeatedly submitting the same requests.
13. Troubleshooting Individual Optimisation
The Optimise button does not work
Refresh the Products screen and try again.
If the problem persists, check for WordPress errors, browser console errors or security restrictions that may be blocking the request.
The API connection test succeeds, but optimisation fails
A successful connection test does not guarantee that every image optimisation request will succeed.
Check the displayed error, your provider account’s usage limits and the image being processed.
The generated alt text is empty
Check the optimisation status and any error message.
Confirm that the product has a featured image and that the selected AI provider is correctly configured.
The description is too long
Review the length settings in SmartDescribe Pro. Save any changes before trying another product.
The description contains irrelevant keywords
Review your writing preferences and any category template instructions. Alt text should describe the image rather than act as a list of search terms.
Existing alt text has been replaced
Review the product’s current alt text and restore or rewrite it if necessary.
For future operations, keep a record of valuable existing descriptions before optimising. If your installed Pro version provides optimisation history and undo, consult the relevant history guide for instructions on using those features.
The featured image changed, but the gallery did not
SmartDescribe’s individual workflow targets the product featured image. Do not assume that gallery images are automatically processed.
14. Recommended Workflow for Store Owners
For the best results, use a consistent review process.
Start with a small sample
Choose a handful of products that represent different types of items in your catalogue.
Optimise one product at a time
Check the result and identify any recurring problems.
Adjust your settings
Refine your tone, length preferences and category templates where necessary.
Review the descriptions
Correct inaccurate or unhelpful output.
Expand gradually
Once you are satisfied with the results, consider using bulk optimisation for suitable groups of products.
This approach helps you identify configuration problems before they affect a large part of your catalogue.
15. Individual Optimisation Checklist
Before finishing, confirm that:
- You selected the correct WooCommerce product.
- The product has a featured image.
- You reviewed the existing alt text.
- You ran the individual optimisation.
- You checked the generated description for accuracy.
- You confirmed that the description is concise and useful.
- You checked the result in the product’s image settings.
- You corrected any unsuitable output.
- You recorded valuable original alt text where necessary.
16. Summary
Individual optimisation gives you control over how SmartDescribe Pro updates product image alt text.
The recommended process is straightforward:
- Open SmartDescribe → Products.
- Find the product you want to improve.
- Review its existing alt text.
- Click Optimise.
- Check the generated description.
- Verify the result and correct it if necessary.
Taking time to review individual results helps establish a reliable workflow before you optimise larger numbers of products.
